Obstetrics vs. Gynecology
While OB/GYN is often considered one field, it actually contains two separate disciplines. Gynecology deals with women’s reproductive health, starting with the first period and going all the way to post-menopause. Any condition that affects your reproductive system, including the cervix, uterus, vagina, ovaries, or Fallopian tubes, will be diagnosed and treated by a gynecologist. Gynecologists also perform routine screenings, including breast and pelvic exams as well as pap smears. They can provide HPV vaccinations to protect against cancer-causing human papillomavirus (HPV) and perform hysterectomies and tubal ligations if necessary. Finally, a gynecologist can offer advice and guidance on sexual matters, including birth control and protection against sexually transmitted diseases.
The field of obstetrics, on the other hand, is concerned with all aspects of pregnancy, from prenatal care to postnatal care. An obstetrician delivers babies, while a gynecologist does not. An obstetrician can also provide therapies and treatments to help with fertility. An obstetrician can provide high-risk pregnancy care and provide guidance in the NICU if necessary. If you are dealing with problems after giving birth, such as postpartum depression, an obstetrician can help you.
3D Ultrasounds
Ultrasound technology has moved beyond the grainy images that we have seen before. Like traditional ultrasounds, 3D ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves and special imaging software to generate images of your baby’s organs, soft tissues, and more. However, 3D ultrasounds can give you a much clearer and sharper look at your baby – you can even get an idea of what your little one is going to look like! A 3D ultrasound is performed just like a traditional ultrasound; first, we will rub gel on your belly, then move a transducer across the gelled area. The transducer directs sound waves towards your uterus, giving you a picture of the baby developing inside. This process is just as safe as traditional ultrasounds.
What are the benefits of 3D ultrasounds? For one thing, they can give your doctor a better grasp of any issues or problems your developing baby might have. When used in conjunction with regular 2D ultrasounds, 3D imaging can help diagnose many potential defects, including cleft palate, cleft lip, spina bifida, skeletal malformations, and more. On a more personal note, many parents find it exciting to get this first glimpse at their baby’s face!
Since traditional ultrasounds still provide a good look at your baby’s progression, some insurance companies don’t provide coverage for 3D images unless they are deemed medically appropriate. If you have questions about coverage or the 3D ultrasound process, don’t hesitate to reach out to our office with any questions you might have.
